Overview:

Join Richard Tulley (recently Director of Programme and Project Management at Sopra Steria) and Ian Clarkson (PPM Practice Director, QA) in conversation as they discuss the principles of effective mentoring relationships and the fundamental principle of being non-directive.

Agenda

The discussion will establish how to see mentoring as an integral part of your personal and professional development, and it will explore establishing a strong sense of purpose through goal setting and understanding your own motivations and drivers.

The discussion shall also provide practical guidance towards preparing for, and entering into a mentoring relationship, and how to avoid conflict between your mentoring relationship and your professional relationships in your role.

Target audience

Anyone with interest in becoming a mentor.

The speakers

Richard Tulley, Programme Leader, Coach and Mentor

From the Fire Service and then on to software developer Richard found his niche in project management in the mid-1990s. Since 2002 Richard’s career has been focused on the delivery of complex programmes, largely within the Public Sector – some examples include the NHS National Programme for IT, the London Cycle Hire Scheme (“Boris Bikes”) and Transforming the Rehabilitation Service.

Having coached colleagues in the context of programme delivery, Richard’s more direct engagement in developing project management talent has been particularly enlightening and stimulating. It has further invigorated his passion for mentoring and ignited a personal and professional interest in coaching.

Richard has presented a series of mentoring webinars for the APM and is an active mentor through the APM and also through the Reed Technology Women in Technology mentoring programme.
